TRICKS OF THE TRADE
Cruel and Unusual Tricks and Traps to Punish your
opponents for playing against such a master player!

Hi, I might as well let them go, ive been using them for long enough. These are some of my best traps and tricks to fool people into pitfalls and destruction in Ultimate Universe. I've perfected these over the years on the likes of Garth Bigelow and, believe me, they work!

Andrue Carr (the definative player of Ultimate Universe)

Once again, assuming you know the basics of Ultimate Universe, and that is: SURVIVAL. How you go about that is your own business but this file should have perhaps a couple of effects on you:

 1. Give you info on how to help other people fail in the above.
 2. Alert you to signs of others who are trying to do the same to you.

Needed items:

 1. A health attitude towards having fun with different aspects of the game.
 2. Many different devices that i will describe as i go i guess.
 3. An ability to deal with what is available to you at any given time. Ill describe some things but you have to be able to improvise upon situations that happen.

MAIN THEORY:

Psychological break down of your opponents and co-players in the game. The best thing is to use their ego against them but countering that with their ability to adapt by throwing monkey wrenches at them that make no sense at all. The basic idea is to either get them thinking they can beat you by playing your little games and thereby proving you wrong, or keeping them occupied in a way that will make them make a fatal or stupid mistake.

BASIC STRATEGIES:

First and formost, get a 'no trail' drive shielding (#293) or better yet a stealth pack (#420). You dont want anyone finding you if your doing any of these because they wont be happy with you! You definatly want to have total control of any trail you leave behind because its important to the stratagy to only be seen when you want to be seen.

Advertising tricks:

This is fun, get a bunch of message beacons from port 6 (#221) or you can use a factory (#196) which is good for this. anyway, the strat here is to work on your opponent's nerves and force him into playing Russian roullette which will eventually kill him dead! sure youll see his ranking raise higher and higher every day but dont be fooled the ranking he gets wont be worth anything when he's in the dead ship area.

What you do is daily place a message beacon somewhere where it will be seen, that increasingly turns from directions on how to play russian roulette to a blatant attack on the guy's ego stating that he isnt worth anything if he can't beat the roulette game.

Start out by placing a beacon in sector 1 that says something like:

 +------------------------------------------------------------------+
Russian Roulette is now being played in sector 4 at: The Darque
M;4;P;R
 +------------------------------------------------------------------+

line it with the standard solid line, remember this is just a subtle hint stage, just informative for the general populace.

you can optionally place another beacon in sector 4 just to point the way again down to the port like this:

 +--------------------------------------------------+
Russian Roulette is now being played, Just P;R
 +--------------------------------------------------+

Then in a couple days place one around somewhere that is somewhat obvious, like in sector 10, 9 or 8 that is like this:

 +----------------------------------------------------------+
Russian Roullette, just think about the possibilities!
Sector 4, Port: The Darque, M;1;M;4;P;R
 +----------------------------------------------------------+

flash the borders on this one.

the next day do this one.

 +-----------------------------------------------------------------+
Russian Roullette, Its so easy! Its so fast! Its the only way!
Sector 4, Port: The Darque, M;1;M;4;P;R;1;2
 +-----------------------------------------------------------------+

flash that one too.

keep checking the newspaper to see if the bait is being taken. wait a couple days and then either replace the ones by masering the old ones and put these down or you can just leave the old ones there and add these new ones.

 +--------------------------------------------------------------------+
Russian Roullette, Common, You know you want to! You know you can!
Sector 4, Port: The Darque, M;1;M;4;P;R;1;2;4;5
 +--------------------------------------------------------------------+

flash again

next day....

 +-------------------------------------------------------------+
Russian Roullette, Only chickens wont take the easy route!
Sector 4, Port: The Darque, M;1;M;4;P;R;1;2;4;5;6
 +-------------------------------------------------------------+

by this time he is either playing it or refusing to succumb to this type of tactic... after that you may want to post some kind of in cash for each button successfully pushed like in the form of a cache in the flea market or a free planet somewhere or something.

That is about all you can do with that one i guess, either they play or they dont. my experience is that they will play and die!

Gosubs and Goto Tricks:

These are kind of fun but you can think up other ways of doing them, just a couple here:

get a gosub(#276) or goto(#275) in sector 8. you go and program it to a sector which can be any number of traps like:

 1. a sector that you know is a cabal infested area.
 2. A sector you fill with as many mines set to attack all, but NO ATTACK DRONES, you can put a sensor damper (#309) or best yet, an advanced sector reflector(#319) pointing to a safe sector like 10 or some fed space you know that has lots of fighters and drones and looks safe.

Best still, you can find a sector with nothing in it, use a planetary holograph to make a planet that looks like its independant and use an isolation device to seal that sector off, then point your sector reflector at that from the original sector with the mines but dont put any attack drones in it. (did you understand that?)

sector(A) has mines in it and is sealed off (NO DRONES!)
sector(A) has a advanced sector reflector(#319) that is pointed to sector(B)
sector(B) has a holographic planet decoy(#298) in it and is sealed off with a neat and tidy(#255)

from sector(A) you program the gosub or goto and then you can do a couple things with it... if you have a bunch of people playing russian roulette you wait till one dies and place a gosub or goto in the flea market the day after they die for some small fee. put both of them in there to ensure a good return, most people will carry a couple so its not abnormal to find a gosub and goto pointing to the same sector. then you pop up a beacon in sector 1 saying how cheap you bought an item for from the flea market in sector 7 or some kind of team transfer message like, hay joe (some arbitrary player name in the current game) goto the flea market and buy the money cache i left for you. and you put a cache in there with some credits in it. sooner or later someone will go to the flea market, buy the goto or gosub and use it cuz when they scan the sector, with their computer they see the sector with the independant planet in it, they think its safe and use the gosub and BOOM! It's very important that you only put mines in the trap sector because if you put attack drones in there then the computer scan wont show the reflected sector. with the gosub, you can program it for the mined sector and go to the reflected sector and use the gosub so it jumps to the mined sector but is listed as returning to the reflected sector, then if they think its safe when they use it, and dont pay attention it will still catch them.

if you think that may be too obvious to your general alternate players you can put the goto or gosub in a cube and put the cube in the flea market, probably when they unpack the cube after buying it they will forget about checking out the gosub and just use it anyway to see where it goes... carelessness again will catch them....

Explosive ship decoys:

This is similar to the above and you can use them there also, but you get a bunch of explosive ship decoys from port 8. also get some sensor dampers or a factory for them. You go around randomly and find some empty sector. place an explosive ship decoy in it, genesis a planet, place about 1000 fighters and 10 mines or so in there and you can either put a sensor damper in there or not its kind of determined on whether your oponents have knowledge enough to get past them and might not be fooled if there isnt one in the sector. you cant be to blatant with this but dont make it too hard either..... actually if you put a damper in there the player will probably expect it there anyway...

after you have done that you then program a goto there and turn off your no trails device, so you will leave a trail! You want there to be a trail for this. you then spoke out from your trap sector for about 3 sectors out in each of the links so a trail is visible for a couple sectors but not too far out, then use the goto to get back to the sector and do it again, till all the links to the sector have a trail leading out for 3 to 6 sectors depending on the time you have... make it a straight line, dont go out and back and across etc... just pick a path and walk it straight then use the goto to get back to the trap. then turn your no trail back on so you dont leave a trail and you may as well drop the goto off in the flea market anyway so go do that.... you can set these up with varying degrees of difficulty to find like isolation devices, sensor dampers, reflector devices etc... taylor it to your opponent's abilities, keep it just a bit above what you think he knows cuz he probably know a bit more than you think he does. generally he will think one or two of them are too easy to find and concider them traps but he will fall for one of them when he reaches the degree of what he feels you hid the sector well enough and it looks like its a true home of your ship.... each person is looking for this and sometime will come along when he is fooled by the trap, because it was just too difficult to find... the main simple way for them to find it is the fact that without spy wards in the sector sooner or later it will get displayed in the spy files in sector 4. the other way is that they will follow your trails back to the sector... if you have used an isolator they will get a phantom warp viewer or something.... and the third way they find it is just shear numbers... the more of these you put out there the easier it is to just wind up running across one sooner or later... anyway if all goes according to plan, they find it, go in and attack your exploding decoy.

CONCLUSION:

oh well, its getting late and i have to work in the a.m. so ill leave it at that i guess. Remember to improvise on these, these are just basic descriptions of some of my traps that need expanding upon in your own style. I dont always put all the info i use into these text files because i get tired of having to think. i have some more that i will try to write up in a day or two along with the self destruct thing too....

Watch for other UUSTART files... ill keep these with the numbering system i have going for now it should be ok... i may change it in the future but ill put the info in the UUSTART9 packet on what i plan on doing.

I am willing to discuss any strategy as long as i am assured it wont get back to Garth Bigelow, he and i are competative players and i dont want him to find out what i can do. Drop me a line with any questions or comments and i will try to help you out somehow.
